Orange Co. Tackles Mosquito Problem

There are two things you can set your watch by in Central Florida: the summer rain and mosquitoes.

Because of the recent rains, Orange County Mosquito Control has been busy out spraying for the pesky insects.

“We see that every time it rains. About 10 days later, we start seeing an increase because the mosquitoes start popping off the breeding sites after the rain,” Orange County Mosquito Control spokesman Thomas Breaud said.

Mosquito Control is treating for the insects across the county in rural and residential areas. Those who must be outside are encouraged to use a repellent containing DEET.

Everyone should try to avoid being outdoors between dusk and dawn, which is when mosquitoes are most active. When outdoors, people should wear clothing that covers most skin.

To limit the mosquitoes, residents should get rid of standing water around homes, including gutters, cans, birdbaths and toys.

“This is really important because, you know, we had locally transmitted Dengue down in Miami, which is a mosquito-borne disease, and the year before last, we had a lot of cases in Key West, and these are cases where mosquitoes breed right next to you in your yard because you have containers. We call those breeder containers,” Breaud said.

So far, there have been no human cases of mosquito-borne diseases in Orange County, and officials said they want to keep it that way.
